The APS currently recommends $300 for a 40-60 minute session. I have a small private practice with no reception costs and so I've chosen to charge less than the recommended fees. I also accept a small number of clients who may be bulk billed under a mental health treatment plan where they experience financial hardship. I have made the decision to charge the fees stated above in order to provide services to a range of people in a range of circumstances and at the same time maintain a high level of professional service. From time to time these fees may be increased.
My fees cover more than just your 50-60 minute appointment. Some of the extra time and costs involved in psychology appointments can include:
Session preparation
Scoring of assessments
Correspondence with clients/stakeholders outside sessions
Case-management research/liaison and crisis support
Note-keeping and invoicing
Medicare and NDIS compliance tasks
Patient management software maintenance and reminder/contact notes
Time spent in liaison with associated professionals (interpreter booking time, GPs, community mental health settings, private health funds, work cover, NDIS coordinators and plan managers etc)
Medicare reporting
Research for professional development
Therapeutic and educational resource development and procurement
Psychologists also incur costs for mandatory professional development, training, supervision, registrations, and insurance. I have set fees that enable me to offer safe, ethical, and professional psychology services.
